Nene Valley Harrier multi-eventer Emma Hornsby had the competition of her life when placing third at the English Schools Athletics Association’s East Anglia Schools’ Combined Events Championships at Corby on the weekend, (June 28/29) scoring a huge heptathlon personal best of 4078 points.

The Manthorpe 17-year-old’s new PB places her in the top 20 in the country for her U20 age group, and puts her safely in the ESAA Combined Events final in Boston in September.

Her scores for the seven events included four lifetime best performances in the 100m hurdles (16.4), the 200m (25.9), high jump (1.61m) and the 800m (2:35.6), while she also held her own in the shot put (7.78m), the long jump (5.33m) and the javelin (17.79m).

She said her achievements had given her confidence to continue to improve through the rest of the season. She said: ‘All the hours of training I have done are finally beginning to pay off. I hope to now further improve my performances for the ESSA combined events final as last weekend has given me the confidence that I can. My PB in the 200m was just one hundredth of a second off the English Schools’ qualification time, and my overall performance was a PB by 219 points.’

Hornsby has also already qualified for the individual long jump event at the English Schools Track and Field finals next weekend (July 11/12) to be held at Birmingham’s Alexander Stadium. Her winning leap of 5.54m at last month’s Lincolnshire County Schools’ Championships shattered the qualifying mark of 5.4m.
