Kettering Cup and Wolverton V

It was a roller-coaster ride for Nene Valley Harriers athletes at Wicksteed Park on Saturday. Runners from the club won two gold medals plus a silver and a bronze at The Kettering Charity Cup meeting, whilst others fared less well just missing out on podium places.

Flo Brill and Megan Ellison have been carrying all before them this cross country season, and continued their successes with resounding victories in the Wicksteed mud.

Brill left her mark on the national running scene in October when posting the fastest leg in the English National Cross Country Relays. She was at it again when winning the 3k under 13 race by a full 30 seconds in a time of 12:01. Fellow Harrier Katie Taster ran well finishing fifth.

At the age of 15, Megan Ellison was up against many athletes a year older than her in the girls under 17 race. This didn't worry the talented Stamford based runner, who won by a margin of 27 seconds, with a 21:20 clocking over the 4.9k course. Ellison’s younger brother Ethan was also amongst the medals taking 3rd place in the boys under 15 race.

Freddie House is another young Harrier to impress recently, and was rewarded for a fine run taking silver in the boys under 11 category.

Five senior men from Nene Valley were in action, and 1st home was Jevan Robertson who finished in 4th position, just outside the medals. Michael Channing was 6th, Chris Warnes 12th, and John Nash 17th. John Baxendale ran strongly, taking 24th position over the 10k course on his club debut.

Nene Valley aces Ruth Jones and Yvonne Scarrott rubbed shoulders with some of the country’s top distance runners in the Wolverton 5 Mile Road race on Saturday, narrowly missing out on prizes in a high class field.

Both athletes are returning to form after a spell in the doldrums and produced fine performances, in what was the 51st running of this popular Road race.

Jones is a habitual fast starter, and set off with the leading ladies. Despite finding the early pace too hot to handle, the 35 year old regrouped to finish 11th woman and 4th over 35 in 33:10

Yvonne Scarrott may turn 50 next year, but her time of 34:08 was her fastest over the distance for a couple of years, and good enough to see her finish 4th over 45 and 17th lady overall.

Both runners felt that they could have gone quicker, but for a gale force head wind on parts of the course.
