Open Indoor Track meeting at Sheffield

A group of Nene Valley Harriers athletes took the preference of avoiding the wind and rain suffered by those competing for the club in the North Midlands Cross Country league fixture, but all were sprinters for the club and did not really have the alternative in their plans.

It was great to meet up with a few of the athletes who are away at University as Jake, Helen and Sean all joined fellow students getting a good blast out for the winter.

Most success of the day went to under 15 Megan Williams who is experiencing her first indoor season and is being rewarded for a step up in her training efforts. Megan. Starting early with the long jump, Megan equalled her personal best with two out of four jumps recording 4.20m but she then took her shot putt forward throwing the 3kg to a 6.35m all time best, the new weight proving to be no problem for her.

Later in the day she targeted 23 seconds for the 150m in her first race starting on the sloped indoor track and smashed the time with an all time best run of 22.49 - two all time bests and equally another personal best.

Under 20 athlete, Lucas Fidler also recorded two personal best performances with times of 1:35.3 in his 600m and 41.66s in the 300m. the tight indoor bends are not easy for Lucas due to his leg length but he adapted well and competed hard.

Jake Berney was our fastest athlete of the day and finished a creditable third place in the third heat of thirty-two for the 60m. His time of 7.37 was respectable and not far away from his personal best. Sean Garmory also went close to his best in the sixth heat recording 7.59 a mere 4 hundredths of a second from his personal best recorded a few weeks ago. Sean predominately a 400m runner was using the event as a sharpener in his preparation for the BUCS in February. This preparation led to a personal best 300m time of 38.76 later in the day despite struggling a bit with his form. He was baulked in the final bend and struggled to maintain the speed.

Also in the 300m, it was good to see Georgie Ivens continue her come back from serious injury recording a time not far from her best of 41.00s. In a later heat Helen Chapman also recorded a personal best run with 45.76s. Under 20 athlete Megan Pusey started the 60m strong but struggled in the closing stages and marginally missed her personal best with 8.77s. The long day of travelling, supporting fellow athletes and 28 heats had an impact on her 300m performance as she showed signs of tiredness coming in with a race to forget of 46.03.

These meetings are largely about training and these athletes are showing the benefits of undertaking these trips.
