  • 04 March 10: Nene Valley Harrier Robert Mohan set another club record winning the England Open Indoor Championships in Birmingham on Sunday 28th February. The 18 year-old shot putter improved his Under 20 mark to 17.56m
  • 15 Feb 10: Robert Mohan has begun his year in excellent form and has been selected to represent England in the shot Put.  For report courtesy of Peterborough Evening Telegraph click here.
  • 20 Jan 10: Message from Ken Maggs. There was marked success in the Northern Indoor Championships at Sheffield.  Bourne based athlete, Adam Mohan won the gold medal in the under 20 mens shot putt by over 2.5m.   His putt of 16.94m was never threatened by any other athlete at the Championships.  This throw is an indoor club record and puts him second in the current years UK rankings (it would have ranked him 3rd in the UK rankings last year).  Other notable results were Emma Hornsby's club record 10.03s in the under 15 girls 60m hurdles and Emily Maltby's 8.19s in the heats of the under 17 ladies 60m broke a club record that has existed since 1994.  Lukasz Bezulski was also unlucky twice beaten into fourth place in both the under 17s 400m and 800m.

There were only two athletes at the Southern Indoors Championships.  Daz Holding was competing in the 60m and 200m to work on his speed for his main, 400m event.  Daz ran 7.50s in his 60m heat but failed to progress further.  However, his 200m performance gave him fith place in the final.  Georgie Ivens after her bronze medal last week in the 400m was running the 200m this week again for speed work.  She went out in the semi finals after having run 27.11 in her heat.

  • 11 Jan 10: Southern Indoor Championships (day 1) Sunday 10 January at Lee Valley. TwoGeorgie Ivens (r) with bronze medal Nene Valley Harriers braved the frozen weather to attend the first day of the Southern Indoor Championships.  On a day where racing was the essence of the day, 400m hurdler Sean Reidy ran a paced heat to qualify automatically for the semi-finals of the senior men’s 400m.  In the semis he found the pace of the flat event too much finishing 5th against a more youthful opposition. Georgie Ivens has just moved up from the under 17s where the 300m was her event and is now competing at 400m in the under 20 age group.  This means athletes could be 21/2 years older than her.  Her pre race target was to get through the heats bearing in mind that the entrants cover the bottom half of England.  Georgie ran the heat with the intention of following the leader and fight for the top three position required to qualify, which was perfectly achieved by following the shoulder of the leading athlete from start to finish. The semi-final was targeted now as being her final, to race as hard as she could to be involved in the race and see what happens.  When she broke after the second bend she was already in third place and sticking to the pre race plan nipped into the second qualifying place before the third bend, perfect form not rushing on the break.  Everyone else would then have to go round her which is never going to be easy with the grit and determination she shows when in a race situation.  She pushed hard of the final bend to qualify comfortably for the final automatically.  This would mean a good lane draw for the final. During her under 17 career Georgie had never run more than two 300m in one day (except in training at not at this level of quality).  The fact that she had now lined up to run her third 400m was daunting for her and more to the point for her legs.  Nevertheless she did not let it put her off the preparation and got down to the work needed.  The race plan was to get out of the blocks fast and try to be involved in the race when it broke.  No one could not have asked for more as she came off the second bend in third place, led by English Schools 300m Champion Amy Allcock and English Schools 300m hurdles Champion Laura Burke.  Despite the aches from the days’ endeavours she stayed strong on the back straight and into the fourth bend to hold off all challengers to take the bronze medal comfortably beating the English Schools 300m Hurdles bronze medallist. Overall a brilliant days racing, the move up in distance has not overwhelmed Georgie in what is the toughest event in track and field.  She can look forward to a lot more achievement and hard work over the next couple of years in this same age group.
